TNB — Stable electric power supply

Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) is Malaysia’s national electricity utility and a primary energy-sector partner for RTL3D.

About TNB

TNB owns and operates the transmission and distribution network across Peninsular Malaysia, delivering power to homes, industry, hospitals, transport hubs, and critical infrastructure. High-voltage corridors—from 500 kV backbone lines down to local distribution—must remain reliable through Malaysia’s frequent thunderstorm seasons.

Why lightning matters for the grid

Cloud-to-ground lightning can trip protection relays, damage insulators and transformers, and trigger wide-area outages. Substations and overhead lines are fixed targets in open terrain. Even brief interruptions affect manufacturing, water supply, communications, and public safety.

How RTL3D supports TNB

RTL3D combines a distributed LF/VHF observation network with real-time 3D charge imaging and nowcasting. Storm charge structure and lightning trends are estimated continuously, giving operations centres actionable lead time before strikes affect exposed assets.

Advance alerts for grid control and field crews
Reduced outage risk on transmission corridors
Targeted protection for substations and switchyards
Joint workshops with TNB and MET

Importance of this system

Stable electricity underpins economic activity and daily life. By linking nowcast information to the actual grid layout shown on the map, operators can see where storms are developing relative to which lines and stations are at risk—supporting faster switching decisions, maintenance planning, and disaster preparedness across the Straits of Malacca study region and beyond.
