Public safety — Aviation & maritime

Lightning is a direct threat to people and operations in open air and on water. RTL3D nowcasts help aviation controllers, port authorities, and ferry operators act before strikes reach exposed routes and hubs.

Aviation

Thunderstorms disrupt approach paths, ground handling, and ramp safety at airports across Peninsular Malaysia. Real-time 3D charge imaging shows where electrification is intensifying relative to flight corridors and aerodromes, supporting MET severe-weather products and airline operations planning.

Maritime

The Straits of Malacca carries heavy shipping traffic between the Indian Ocean and South China Sea. Lightning endangers crews on open decks, port loading operations, and island ferry routes across the RTL3D observation region.

Industry & tourism

Construction sites, outdoor festivals, and coastal tourism use the separate Industry & tourism view — lightning movement with 5-minute live volumes and a 30-minute mock nowcast.

How RTL3D supports public safety

Localized lightning sources and 15 km radiation zones are mapped against the observation network that underpins regional nowcasting. Products are shared through workshops with MET, port authorities, and community stakeholders.

Importance of this system

Protecting lives and livelihoods requires knowing where lightning activity is building across aviation routes, shipping lanes, and populated coastlines. RTL3D links scientific nowcasts to the same map view used for grid and water-sector partners—giving a shared situational picture for cross-sector public safety coordination.
